Hey guys... or gals,
I've got a 02 Z06. What do you recommend for the manual transmission oil. I'm thinking of Redline...
No racing, just a street car.
Royal Purple Synchromax. It's an oil made specifically for manual trans cars that specify ATF. I've tried several oils in my quest to get smoother shifting and this oil has been the best.
Hrm here's a scary question ...how often should manual transmision oil be changed? Taking a wild guess and thinking that time is long past for me and I better do it asap.
It doesn't have to be changed as often as you think. Doing it whenever you feel like it should be more than enough. Sometimes, in fact, I have to hold myself back.
i chose to use Amsoil ATD on recommendation from these forums and a couple GM V8 owners at the track. it feels a bit better than before.
any quality synthetic oil (DEXRON-approved) should work fine.

Iv been running OEM GM stuff but thinking about putting in Royal Purple synchromax next time around.
I tried the new Dexron V I beleive it is called from Mobil 1. Also tried the older versions. I ran RP Synchromax inbetween. I just went back to the RP. It's the only one I've used that smooths out the synchros so that downshifts at higher rpms don't require a fight or grinding.
I also use their oil, ps fluid, and diff fluid. No complaints.
My little Celica commuter car has 2 bad synchros. I just drained it and put the RP in there too. Doesn't fix them for sure but makes them easier to deal with.
4 quarts. Drivers side there is the fill hole. Disconnect the electrical plug and unscrew. next, unscrew the drain plug. after it drains, redo the plug and fill with fluid until it starts seeping/flowing out of fill hole. redo fill plug, replug electrical plug and go. you will need a fluid pump (the kind that fits into the bottle and pumps fluid up because there is no room to pour down into the trans.
I have an '02 with 14000 miles, just changed the fluid to Royal Purple Syncromax. Before the change it was somewhat "notchy" and would only go into reverse with some additional pressure. Reminded me of my John Deere. Now it shifts smoothly with much less effort. I bought the RP at the local speed shop for $8 per quart. Took a little over 3 quarts. Be ready when you take the drain plug out to drain your transmission, the fluid is thin and comes out fast.
I put a 1/2" hose about 10 inches long on the RP bottle and was able to put bottle up beside the trans, insert the hose into the trans case and squeeze the fluid into the case. Not too messy.
