Why does my engine rattle when i shut my car off? I have an 04 M6. I have the car in Nuetral with the parking brake on when i turn the key off. It makes a clunking sound kinda like this 84 Cadilac i had once did when i would shut it off. Just doesn't seem normal. Thanks for any possible info. I should also mention i turn the key off with the clutch depressed.
I'll bet that you are shutting the car off in neutral with the clutch pedal not depressed. If you shut the car off with the clutch depressed you won't hear that rattle. It is a normal noise and not a problem. I believe if you search the operators manual it will tell you to shut the car off with the clutch pedal depressed.

It's not your engine, its your clutch. Step on the clutch pedal as you shut it off and the noise goes away.

Hey
If not just the simple death rattle. As addressed above. It could be post ignition fireing. Run some Chevron fuel system cleaner through the fuel system and stay with 91oct or higher gas. Depending on mileage you may need new plugs in the spring.
Why put it in neutral to shut it off? You don't leave it parked in neutral do you?
I just pull in the garage, or parking space in first gear, depress the clutch so you don't stall, and shut it off. Then let the clutch out a moment or two later. No rattle, and the car doesn't roll away after you park it.
