Beautiful day last Sunday so wife and I were on a nice, top down drive. I always watch my gagues when driving and suddenely the check gaguge lights up on the HUD. When I look down the fuel gague shows empty. Not low, but flat empty. I had just passes a Shell station so I turn around and fill her up. Only got 9 gallons in her before it was full.
When I started it up it red empty for about 3 to 4 seconds, then went to full. Drove home, about 40 miles and all seemed ok.
Any ideas would be helpful. Oh 2000 vert, one owner, me. Thanks, Mark
Common problem. The sending unit gets dirty. You can try some Techron 11 or some Seafoam in the gas tank or use Chevron after the treatment.(has techron in it) Other than that replace the gauge. If you do a search there is all kinds of info on the subject.
The fuel guage is one of several 'problem' areas on the C-5. I suggest you read the sticky's at the top for more information. The fuel gauge and the column lock seem to be the two most prevalient. The column lock bugaboo is the one that can really cost you and/or strand you. There is a easy fix for it if it effects your car. (2000's are possibly affected).
Do a serach on column lock bypass, and also on fuel gauge.
Mine does same thing every month or so, its an 03. I put Seafoam in 3 times since last March and guage works for about 3-4 weeks then goes to empty.
I burn nothing but Shell V-power, no Chevron here in Indy area. I just set the trip mileage every time just in case and move on. I can think of a lot of other things to spend my money on than fuel sending unit replacement.

Sounds like a job for Techron II it sure solved my problem.
3 possible problems
1. foulded sending unit... needs a couple tank fulls of good fuel system clenaer ( not injector cleaner) Techron, Seafoam, Berryman Chemtool B-12, Valvoline Synpower Synthetic Fuuel system cleaner

Its the sending units and not the gauge. The newer gasolines have higher sulfur content which erodes the sending unit contacts thus your gauge will come and go, eventually it will go completely.
I managed to have my 2001 replaced under warranty and this was listed as the issue by the tech.
Though this is associated with C5s, other Chevy's have this issue too.

Try a few bottles of Techron in the gas the next couple of times you fill up. High sufur content in the gas can cause the fuel sending units to malfunction.
Thanks guys for the help. I will check for any codes and try some Techron ll as well. Cant use Chevron around here. Shell V-Power is about the best I can do. Mark

You still should be able to purchase (in a bottle) the additive from a local store (I.e., Auto Zone).
Is this a warranty issue. Whats involved in changing the part that causes this? I got my 03 z061 week ago and now im finding out about all these cool problems. I GOT THAT GREAT GM FEELING right now
