It finally bit me! Column Lock disaster!
This morning I got in, backed halfway down the drive and it died. Turned around and down at the bottom it had the dreaded message, "Remove key, wait ten seconds".
Well, I tried that a couple of times and each time, it cranked fine but as soon as I put it in gear, it stopped almost immediately with it telling me, "Service Column Lock".
So now my baby sits in the garage waiting for the tow truck Monday morning to take it to the stealership. It's had the GM fix, but because it's a 98, I didn't want to take the chance of installing the kit. the early years do funny things sometimes when people have installed that kit.
Anyone have ideas on what I can do to get her going again?
BTW, the steering wheel isn't locked. It just won't keep running.
1) Turn on the ignition but don't start the engine.
2) Press the "RESET" button to turn off any warning messages
3) Press and hold "OPTIONS"
4) While holding "OPTIONS", press "FUEL" four times within a 10-second period.
Initially, on-board diagnostics go into an "Automatic Mode" which shows diagnostic codes in a pre-set sequence: PCM - TCS - RTD - BCM - IPC - RADIO - HVAC - LDCM - RDCM - SCM - RFA. All codes will be displayed for each module. If none are present in a given module, you will see "No More Codes" on the display.
To exit the diagnostic mode at any time, press "E/M". If you want to erase codes in a given module, press "RESET".
To reset the codes once in manual mode, press and hold "RESET" until it displays "NO CODES". Press "OPTIONS" to go to the next module. Repeat the steps until you have reset the codes in all the computer modules.
Key back off, remove fuse #25 and wait 10 minutes before re-installing it.
Install the fuse, bring key back to On and all messages should be cleared as well as the fuel cut-off. If you still have problems repeat the above except this time remove fuses #25 and #29 for 10 minutes. Repeat again and it should be good to go.

When did the dealership do the fix?
You pulled the key all the way out of the ignition and waited at least 5 sec and tried again with same result?
Where did you get this info ?

I ask because I have been dealing with this for several weeks since installing the CLB. No recalls have been done to my Vette and it is also a 98. I have done everything you mention plus other things but get the "pull key wait 10 sec" everytime my car sits for over 10 -15 min. The only thing I did not do was leave the fuses out for 10 min.

Two words for you: Chuck CoW
He is a forum vendor and he is the only one i know of that can take care of the column lock problem for good. I looks like the guys from the dealer do nothing but unlock it and flash the latest "fix" from GM witch still does not fix the dreaded column lock. Give him a call 914-332-0049

Am I also hearing correctly that the CLB fix that can be bought from Corvettes of Houston also has problems????
You will NEVER get stuck again!

Chuck gave me total peace of mind, not to mention awesome new throttle response and cooler operating temperature.
On top of that, he completely tunes out CAGS, light and all.
Money well spent. No problem removing the computer and Chuck gives super quick turnaround.
(No, I don't work for Chuck, LOL.)
