Default Rear End Leak

Man, the search function on this forum is about as temperamental as 3 month old infant. I'm a computer guru and still have trouble making it bring back the right results.

With that said, I've seen threads that describe something about the rear end leaking. It sounded like a common C5 problem which is why I don't understand why I'm not pulling up any decent threads. Maybe someone can direct me to one or tell me about the problem and fix. Thanks!

I saw a thread earlier about "4.10's" Is that a rear end gear ratio, like a 373?

Now that you say that, I think the spot I saw was more to the left side. Is this a fix I can do in the garage? Is there a thread?

That was the first place I looked. Didn't find anything.

That was the trick. No wonder I can't find anything. I didn't know to look in the other sections of the forum. Good tip.

Now, what the hell is a 4.10?

The C5 has been known to leak from the seals where the drive axles go into the differential. Mine has leaked three times and finally on the third time it looks like they have gotten it fixed. Also, some C5s seem to have been made with very porous covers on the sides of the differential and have leaked from that location (mine was one of them).

The repair obviously requires replacement of either the seals or the cover.

As the gaskets get older they start to sweat and is an indication that the gasket needs to be replaced.

If the problem is the pan gasket it will cost about $200-$300.
if it is the side cover that could costo you about $500 plus

I just had both done in a 5 month period.

I ain't messing with the power train in my Vette. It's fine just the way it is. My Camino gets me in enough trouble as it is.

4.10 to 1 is the numerical ratio of the ring and pinion gear set in the rear differential. The pinion gear driven by the drive shaft has to turn 4.10 revolutions to make the ring gear turn 1 revolution.

The higher ratio equates to a better mechanical advantage, but usually is offset by a less economical operating cost. Hope this helps.

Damn Zilla, we both have the same exact cars. How many miles on yours and what part of the U.S. are you in?

^^Is that price just for parts or is it for parts and installation?

Do you know what the parts by themselves cost?

Thanks

That is for everything parts labour and taxes.

the cost of the axle seal parts and gear lube was $124 CDN and labour was $495 CDN.

At first I was trying to figure out where the land of "big breast and fine women" were, then I saw the flag. Oh well, so much for you recommending a local mechanic.
