Did search, but all you guys seem to buy the high end units......I am n ot ready to make that big a jump. That is what I asked for feedback on two particular models.
Yeah, I've got the high end unit. The top Tom Tom, which works really well. But I have a business justification - it spends about 200 days a year in rental cars or my company Ford.
For my wife's car, I'm looking at the Tom Tom One, since the Go 910 works so well. But the Nuvi family gets great reviews, too.
As an aside, I didn't think I'd use the thing much - sort of fretted about the purchase. It's a lot of money, and even though it's mostly for company benefit, I couldn't expense it to them. But it's made travel a lot easier. The only place it didn't help me much was mid-town Manhattan, and the tall buildings there blocked the signal. As soon as I got off the main drag and into more normal sized buildings (say 20 storey or so), it worked great again.
If you tour much, or travel for business, you'll probably really appreciate either one.
I got a tomtom go 510 off of woot. It was $200. Mine works great and is very easy to use and modify. the downside for the tomtom "Go" line is that you have to use the windshield mount as the power connection to the unit itself is in the mount.
Garmin's get great reviews, but for my first nav unit in the car I did not want to start with a $350 Garmin Nuvi 350 or 360.
I'm very satisfied with the Tomtom. They all have their pros and cons and it is a debate that will never be settled.
Garmin's tend to be smaller and more portable, but come at a higher cost. TomTom's can be had for a little less up front cash.
I'm betting you'd be happy with any entry level around $200-$300 from either TomTom or Garmin. The other's I'm sure are good units, they just have less market share so less reviews to be found, and fewer modifications like custom Points of interest, map colors, voices, etc.
I have the Garmin 360. Nice unit. It has voice prompts for directions and bluetooth for your phone.
The speaker in the unit is on the back so even at full volume its hard to hear. But the new ones have a FM transmitter so it will 'talk' through your FM radio. I'd have bought one of those if I knew that was coming up.
Just my 2 cents.
Because it will work on my boat, I purchased the Lowrance 250c on E-Bay for $179.00. We used it on our trip to Bowling Green, Columbus, Ohio, Angola, In., Indianapolis and back to Spring Hill. A great unit!!! I took the stupid windshield mount and altered it to fit in the ashtry. Works great and looks great! I found out when we got back that Circuit City sells them and no shipping involved.
