Neighbor has a 99 and when he comes up to a light on occasion the car bucks and stalls like it’s starving for gas. It’s an A4.
Restarts great and with no problem and runs like a BOH under throttle or WOT.
It’s never had the Fuel Filter changed.
He thinks it’s something in the tranny a solenoid or something, and I told him to change out the fuel filter.
Any ideas??????
its a cheap and easy fix. if its not the source of the problem, it certainly won't hurt to get it done. how many miles on the car now?
my SHO had a similar problem a while back. it would stall frequently when the engine speeds would go down such as when at stoplights. it would be worse in parking lots while turning, the power steering pump load would cause the engine to stall. I replaced the fuel filter, and on a couple of occasions ran fuel system cleaner through it. it took about 3 bottles with a few tanks of fuel to finally clean it up, but the car has been running great ever since.

It's got about 110K on it and it's never been changed. That's why I believe it's the filter.
If it runs like a BOH under WOT it is not a plugged fuel filter. This sounds more like dirty injectors, bad plugs or wires, or an air leak. I have 113,000 miles and have not changed the fuel filter, no problems.

I think the first thing I would do is clean the MAF - CAREFULLY. Then a double dose of Techron to clean the injectors.

I recently had the exact same problem........It was an air leak, check the air bridge area. Hopefully thats all it is.
Watch it mine leaked live a sieve when a plastic connector failed

Had about 70K on my 98 and one day I saw a huge amount of gasoline at the left rear fender dripping under the car. I was one of the plastic snap connectors going in to the filter. When replacing the filter make sure you change BOTH connectors including the one on the fuel line. If not you are asing for trouble. BIGHANK
