This may be a silly question, however where would I find my Engine # on my 2004 Z16?
The pad behind the water pump on the right hand side of the block is highly polished without any #.
The engine ID number will be located on the block just to the rear of the LH cylinder head, or the front part of the LH oil pan rail, or the vertical area just below the rear of the head.
Hope this helps.
Also: if you call one of GM's customer service numbers and ask them for some restoration information on your car they will send it to you free of charge. You must have your VIN number handy because they will ask you for it.

I have a 1980 C3 and the engine ID is on a pad on the right hand side of the block.
Does my Z16 have the engine ID stamped in to the block or is it cast?
Do Z16 have matching engine ID with the VIN?
PM me your email address and I'll send you a photo copy of the GM print showing the stamp locations.
To answer your question..Yes there is what they call a vin derivative stamping on the block.
