Default People are installing

...XM in their vettes and I am very interested in this idea for my next one. Now has anyone figured out a way to install Onstar? Is it even possible? My husband says there was a thread about this but I can't find it or remember seeing it soo let's try not killing me for asking a repeat question

If this is possible and someone has done it--please post as much info as possible.

TIA
Lori

Hi Lori,
it is my understanding that OnStar can not be added aftermarket. XM and Sirius rock.

Yes they do. I haven't listened to "regular radio" since getting Sirius installed 3+ years ago.

You may want to re-consider this idea, especially if you don't like the possibility of anyone randomly listening in on conversations between you and your passenger .

What Onstar doesn't tell you is they can listen to you without your knowledge while you are in your car.

How do I know?

1st, its logical right. If you can talk to them when you push their magic button. Don't you think that can be over-ridden? Like the advertisement that has an operator contact the driver after their airbag deployed. Nobody pushed the Onstar button first.

But the better evidence is, there was a recent federal court case in San Diego involving City Council members and a mobster out of Las Vegas. He was bribing them so they'd vote to relax some of the topless establishment laws in the city.

It was stated in court that the FBI got a warrant to legally wiretap the mobster via his OnStar system installed in his Hummer (ie. listen to his private conversations between him and his passengers via Onstar's microphone transmits to the OnStar operations centers). They didn't even have to "bug" his car! There evidence was used to convict the two city councilmen.

My point. Their 'wiretap' was legal but who is to keep the Onstar operators from listening in on anyone while they are bored out of their minds waiting for someone to contact them.

Being a fan of less government intrusion I'd NEVER buy a car with Onstar or I'd have the microphone yanked out if I did. I've managed without if for the last 45 years of driving. I think I can continue to manage, especially when I think of all the people who didn't have it when they managed to cross the country in covered wagons.

Good luck!

I've contacted Onstar's Tech Support team for a feasibility report on "kit bashing" a salvaged system. I myself think it could be done (and cool with GPS Nav, hands free Blue Tooth, and the help aid.) But think it could be not cost effective and would probably require either the salvaged car vin signature or a reflash of the prom. And have questions about the BCMs role in this system. Anyone's thoughts?

Hi Dave

It was a thought---as least I have the possibility of the XM so that is

How is everything?

It would be easy to spot the operator listening in on my conversations - it would be the one that is asleep.

You are better off buying a single-din aftermarket head unit with pop up screen that does cd/mp3/TV/dvd/iPod hook up, and GPS with XM/Sirius options. they can be picked up and isntalled for less than $1K.

Leave the Onstar alone. I too hate the idea of big brother riding along with me everywhere. You can get everything you want from onstar via other means. Granted, a cell phone won't call you like the onstar operator after the airbag deploys but how often do you think you are going to need that option?

Just my $.02 Keep the change
