Default Oil Temp?

I just got my 2002 vette and noticed the oil temp was hitting 115-120 degrees, is this normal?

When I checked my oil temp a few months back on a trip (freeway driving) the temp was 200. That was after the car had been driven an hour or more.

Your temp seems a little low. How long had you run your car before checking the temp?

Default Oil Temp

I had driven it for about an hour also. I guess I'm a little on edge with being a new owner . Thanks for putting me at ease.

In fact that temp is so low, it almost (not quite) seems like a celsius rather than Fahrenheit reading. When thoroughly warmed, mine also runs around 200F.

Did you mean 215-220? That's not uncommon especially in stop and go traffic. 115-120 is actually way low....

Default Oil Temp

I am driving in 10 degree weather here in Canada, I haven't had time yet to take it on the road for a good run.

So, either he's having an oil temp sending unit problem, OR his temp is about right for driving in 10 degree weather. OR, his engine hasn't had time to warm up to full operating temerature.

When fully warmed up, and that takes a fair bit of driving, preferably on the highway, the oil temperature should be slightly higher than your coolant temperature.

The temp your oil is working best for you is between 219 - 230 (F). 200-205 (F) on the highway is normal. Not sure if you are running "C" or "F", but I am guessing that your oil temp is probably fine.

Enjoy the car.

Your oil temps will generaly run higher than your coolant temps so you are well w/in the safe limit!

Even a little low at that!

Thanks,Matt
