CCA is coming out with UHMW (ultra high molecular weight) versions of their Aluminum skid plates. If i remember correctly, they should be selling for $60 and are strong enough to lift the car with (no jacking pucks needed)

Do these "skid plates" go on over the existing plastic rocker panel?

No, they are mounted directly to the frame. (just inside the plastic panel) There should be about a 1/4" difference in ground clearence between the rails and the plastic panel.
If you want UHMW (which are lighter, corrosion proof, easy to install and leave the shipping slots open (thus they accept stock lifting pucks) , also check out what Nasty98 has to offer.
I have these no my C5, and they're about to go on my C6. Excellent quality and finish, and perfect fit. My first thought was they were a bit pricy, but after seeing/installing Elite's stuff, I'm thinking "getting what ya pay for."
