If both posts are connected and you put a wrench on the + post you create a hazard. If the + wrench touches anything metal as you are removing the post it will short out + to - because all metal in the car is ground -.

If both posts are connected and you put a wrench on the - post you do not create a hazard. If the - wrench touches anything metal as you are removing the post it will not do anything because the wrench is - and the metal in the car is also ground -.

Once the - post is disconnected, you can wrench on the + post without creating a hazard because there is no chance of it shorting out on the ground -. Even if you were to have the + wrench on the terminal and rest it hard agianst a metal component nothing would happen because the electricity would have no way to get back to the - terminal on the battery.

I hope that makes it clear as mud... LOL.

Basically you do not ever want to place a wrench on the + terminal if the - terminal is connected.

Connect a battery jump-pak to the cables and you won't have to redo and memory sets.

I've seen those that plug into the cigarette lighter. I don't know how long they last, though. Especially in a C5 with all the electronic systems drawing on it.

You know, with an electronics's degree I never knew this but with your explanation, it makes perfectly good sense! Now I'll have to file that away with, "righty tighty, lefty loosey..."

They use a 9v battery...good for a few hours at most with the draw of the electronics. I use one when I'm doing work expected to last 2-3 hours with the battery disconnected.
