Yesterday pulling out of a parking lot my car dies. I start it back up and try to go and dies again. It was saying something about the column lock. I called the chevy dealer down the street and they said there was a recall on that and to hav it towed. today they call me and say the recall was performed 6 months ago but it was something like the steering wheel actuator was locked up(not covered by the recall) and part price was $725..Does that sound weird that 6 months ago it was tore apart and had the racall done and now some other part failed.. By the way it was that same dealership that did the recall work.
Check your paperwork from the previous work...some of the dealership work is warranted for one year. You might have to get a GM regional rep involved since this was previously repaired on your car.
The other option is to read through the "sticky" at the top of C5 Tech about this very issue. You can buy and install a column lock bypass (CLB) and avoid the issue.
The recall does not involve working on the column lock actuator. The lockplate is removed, and a Harness K wiring harness is installed to simulate the actuator signal to the BCM.
DO NOT let the dealer talk you into replacing the column lock actuator. Since the column cannot lock anyway, you can make the car driveable without replacing the actuator.
Most likely, the relay in the Harness K wiring harness has failed, and the BCM is not receiving the correct signal to keep it from cutting the fuel when you try to drive the car. IF the BCM determines that the actuator is in the locked position, or it cannot determine the position, it sends a signal to the PCM to cut the fuel when you drive the car over 2 or 3 MPH.
The GM version of the bypass keeps the actuator in the circuit, and the aftermarket version actually leaves the actuator disconnected.
The dealer should replace the Harness K relay at no charge if it has failed. If your column does not lock, so you know the lockplate has been removed, you can also just install an aftermarket version of the column lock bypass relay.

Hey guys, sorry I havnt kept you all up to date. So they replaced the actuator($730) and a day later I was stranded again. The dealership said they would stand by there work and that there would be no extra charges since it was still saying "service column lock". two days later they said the put a new BCM in it and everything is working great.
