I got a good estimate for installing headers and getting a dyno tune but I've been thinking about adding a cam at the same time. That will save some $$ on the dyno to get them done together.
I don't plan on any serious racing so a good street cam should work...don't want to do heads, rods or anything else too exotic. Just want the benefits of a good peice of equipment - performance and sound.
I think prices are about the same for Crane and LG - any other brands to look at? What kind of specs should I look for? Where can I go to learn more about cams before I buy to make sure I know what I'm getting? Thanks
What kind of power do you want? I have a cam that is considered to be on the larger side (238/244 .605/.612 114) and it is very streetable and I am making 436 rwhp with it on stock heads. Oh and mine is a custom Comp grind.
I have a custom comp grind also. 240/244, 598/608, 112LSA. Mine made 440rwhp, on mustang dyno. Heads are stock, just did the springs, and pushrods. Very streetable also.

Your choice should be determined by how you want the car to act, and where in the rpm range you want most of your power. There are nearly limitless possibilities in the mild to wild spectrum. There are many proven grinds already or you can talk to a cam expert and get one custom ground to fit your current modifications and expectations.
Getting a new cam is kind of like moving in with a woman. You really don't know if its going to work out until you spend some time with it, but you can always change later if it doesn't suit you.
Just a few possibilities:
Mild: LPE GT-11 (what I got) 215 / 231 .631" / .644" 118CL
Middle of the road: (what I'm thinking about) LPE GT1-1
LG G5X1
Texas Speed Torquer2
Wild: (don't think I'm man enough) Texas Speed MS3 & MS4
LG G5X3

Reason: added few suggestions
I have an HPE-S sitting in a box, which is pretty close to the MS3 and/or GX3. The cars I've heard running this sound very cammed up - no mistake, however, with the right tune, the idle smoothly, don't surge, etc.
The current plan is cam only, spring kit, ASP Pulley (which I also have) plus my existing blackwing/bridge/headers. Figured it should be in the 420-430rwhp range for pretty cheap! (planning on doing the install myself, and then get a pro tune).
You guys quoting your HP figures.... At what RPM? Making 440 WHP at 7K is totally different than 420 WHP at 6K (peaks)....... It helps to understand how the cam acts if you tell us the RPMs. Thanks.

This is a very good point. Chasing HP numbers has lead to a lot of unhappy people driving street cars with big cams. Here's a dyno graph of my current setup with the aforementioned mild cam that drives and idles like stock. Note this is with ported LS6 heads though.
If you dont want to change springs nor get hardened pushrods, then you need to go with a small/mild cam. Its not recommended to use stock springs or pushrods with big cams.
By the way i made 450rwhp with the G5x3 and ported ls6 heads and LG Pros, and it very streetable for that size cam, another thing to look into is a good tuner in your area since streetability is mostly in the tune.
