Default Removing Brake Calipers

I want to remove my brake calipers to paint them. Its going to be my winter project. Is it easy to remove them? I am an amateur mechanic at best so any advice on removing them would be great!

Also when the brake fluid drains do I have to immediately refill it or can I leave it drained for the winter and refill it in the spring?

Your best bet is to do a search, either here or even better in the C5 tech section, i Just did last night/this morning, LOTS of good info.
Good Luck
(Im changing my brake pads and rotors tomorrow!!, should paint the calipers while im there eh?)

If its the first time the calipers have been removed since...say the day
they were put on the car from the factory, you'll be using some extra
elbow grease.

Doesn't really matter how long the calipers are disconnected from the
brake lines as you'll need to bleed the brakes anyway.

Some will say don't let as much brake fluid leak out to where the master
cylinder runs dry either.

I just removed my stock rotors/calipers/pads and replaced them with aftermarket ones... The calipers are easy to get off, it's unscrewing them that may be a problem if this is the first time... I believe they had red locktite on them. Anyways, some hard pushing and the bolts come out. Once you have everyone undone, you will see how easy it is.

Hi dmoore -

No need to break into the fluid system - here is how I paint calipers -

http://www.iammoon.com/c5tech/caliper_painting.htm

If you insist on removing the lines from the calipers, then you will have to cycle the anti-lock brake system to fully bleed the brake system.

best regards -

Really they don't have to be removed to paint them. You can mask off the area really well and paint away!

Easy to paint them on the car, don't use that brush on stuff, spray paint works great.

When I removed mine I just put a threaded bolt into the end of the brake line to stop the brake fluid flow and Let the very minimal drip fall into a tin can. They were off for most of the winter. In the spring I reattached and flushed the brake system.

I can send you a word doc how to.... just PM me your e-mail address
