Default Rear end clunking sound

I have a 2002 C5Z. When I lightly feather the throttle between acceleration and de-acceleration, I hear a clunking sound from the differential or transmission. It is most noticeable in first and second gears. It sounds like there is excessive play in some gears. I thought it might be a CV joint so I jacked up the car. When I twist each rear wheel back and forth I can hear the clunking sound. The sound appears to be coming from either differential or the transmission. I started hearing this sound about 2 weeks ago. The car has 36,000 miles. Any ideas about what this might be?

I can't be a lot of help, too many possibility's, but I have run a drive train specialty shop for a little over 20 years and this might be a place to start. It's most likely not transmission, if it doesn't pop out of any gears & doesn't have gear or bearing wine that goes away in 4th. The torque tube is going to transmit noise, which might make this difficult to find. Other than checking control arm bushings etc., shocks, engine and differential mounts. Engine off, Key off (Ha! Ha!),E-brake off, put the car in first, have A buddy push from one end of vehicle, and you from the other, rock the car back and forth. If You get lucky, you may be able to pin point the area to scrutinize.

It sounds like it might be the axles. Do a search and you should find something.
