Posting on Z06 and C5 general as this maybe a common problem.
My hood has cracked on the upper passenger side next to fender. Anyone else experience this? Also the drivers side also has the same cracks but they are only in the clear coat. This is the only defect to my car and I wonder has anyone else experienced this or knows what causes it. I do have a vararam installed and a K&N bridge (at least that is what is stamped on it.) Could this mod cause it? I look under the hood but cannot determine what has caused this.
Will this crack spread is there anyway to halt the spreading?
If it's the actual hood that has cracked I know a friend that had a fiberglass hood on and when he left a wrench under the hood and closed it, it cracked in the same spot. So be careful of what you maybe leave under the hood. If not something like that I don't know why it would of cracked but should maybe take it to a good body/Corvette shop and see if they can repair it.
Dropping the hood (or slamming the hood) may have something to do with this symptom. A member of z16.org found significant cracks in his carbon fiber hood near the lift shocks so it might be more common than most realize.
My Z16 hood does not close by dropping it. It will catch on only one side requiring the other side to be manually pushed down. I think it has to do with the fact that the hinges are not positioned at the same point on either side. I've made minor bumper adjustments and it hasn't cured the problem.
I lower the hood gently and close one side at a time with my hand/elbow and quick detail afterwards if needed.
One reason may be that the fasteners are located on each side of the hood and some people just drop the hood to close it. This can stress the area, I always close mine by letting the hood down and pushing down on each side right over the latch. Have to now anyway because the carbon fiber hood is so light it won't drop and has to be hand closed.
