I bought my car with aftermarket Z06 rims. Every time I started the car, it would give a "service tire mon. sys" on DIC and I would have to reset it. Cycling through the gauges, there was never a reading for tire pressure. I assumed the sensors were removed.
A few days ago, I checked pressure manually and filled the tires. A couple of days later, I realized that I wasn't getting the service message anymore. I figured I must have been wrong and that the sensors are in the wheels and they were just low.
Last night, I am telling my g/f about this and I cycle through the gauges and still no readings from TPS. Not a minute later, the "service tire mon sys" message comes on.
What do the valve stems look like on the TPS? I've never really looked at my stems, but I thought they were just rubber stems with a chrome sleeve over it.
If I don't have TPS installed, why did the message stop for a few days? Was it just a fluke?
Thanks Steve. I am pretty sure my stems don't look like that. I suppose it is possible that sensors are banded to the inside of the wheel though. Is there any way to tell without breaking the tire down?
Not that I know of..you may want try and reprogram them..If they do not respond I would say they are not there.. Check the C5 tech tips for how or someone may post the how to.. Here ya go
If you keep hitting reset each time you throw the code..it won't always throw the code every single time, it will sometimes be intermitten. When I swap wheels for the winter, I have to retrain the sensors on my stock wheels when I put them back on...sometimes I'll forget to do it right away, and it will take the system a few days before it recognizes and then it will throw the code.
Have you tried to re-train the sensors to your car? If you do have sensors and they were from another car, you'll have to train them to your car. I'll see if I can find the procedure..it's floating around here somewhere. You need a very strong magnet. Takes about 3 mins to do, very simple...
edit- just saw the post above..that is the procedure to retrain

if they don't respond you either dont have them or they are dead sensors. The horn will honk once for each tire trained. Sometimes it takes a few seconds for the signal to pick up so be patient.

If your valve stems are not rubber, try doing the sensor relearn with a magnet. If that doesn't work, then you may not have any sensors in there or they are dead.
I found a thread with the re-train instructions earlier so I have those ready to go. Thanks anyway though. I am going to try to do that today if I can find a good magnet for it. If they are banded in, it looks like I may have to try the magnet in different locations until I find the sensor.
what kind of magnet do i need to do this. there is a magnet on ebay for $17 that is round with a hole in it,is this a good buy or can i just use a regular magnet? thanks

I asked the same question yesterday. Someone said they used an old speaker magnet.
You can by a package of round magnets(~1/2" dia.) at most craft stores. They have like 4/pkg. Stack the magnets and place to the side of the valve stem. If the horn dosen't blow, move the magnet to the other side and try it. I also have a small horseshoe magnet I picked up at Ace hardware. It works on my wagonwheels but not on the newer 5 spokes. The stack of round magnets work on both.
hey joesc5, thanks for the tip, I'm off to hobby lobby sat morning. also my mom was born and raised just outside of Springfield in a small town called Billings Mo. do you know where that is? ed
I definitely have the rubber stems like I thought. Still not sure if they are banded inside or not. I checked Radio Shack and Odd Lots today for magnets. Didn't find any. I didn't think to try Lowes. That may be on the schedule for Sunday. Thanks

You dont have them!
I swapped out my stock thin spokes for new wheels and I got the same thing.
I did not have sensors and it would trigger the service tire sensor alarm and read xxxx on the lbs and some would read a weird number like 10 or 20 but I had 30 lbs on all of them..
The alarm would go away but then return...this means you dont have sensors.
They are not banded in. You are refering to the type that fasten to the inside of the rim. The factory computer only recognises the factory type sensors and these are only the valve stem type.
