Default column lock question

Went to start the vette this morning. Got a "service column lock" code. tried to pull out of the garage and car died BUT the steering wheel NEVER locked up at all the whole time. If i take it to the dealer, is this covered under my extended warranty OR is this a recall issue and the dealer eats the cost (I don't want to have to pay my deductible). Later i went out and started it again and NO problem. I even took it for a short spin with no problems. Not sure if this service was done before on it. What you think??

Does your column lock at all when the key is out?
If you can hear the column lock actuator cycle, but the column does not lock, then the lockplate has probably been removed under the recall. If it has had the recall, there is also a GM Harness K relay installed that can cause the fuel to be cut if the relay fails.
The relay is there to send the correct signal back to the BCM to simulate the column as unlocked and keep the fuel from being cut.
You can either take it back to a dealer and have them replace the GM harness, which should be under the recall at no charge, or install an aftermarket column lock bypass relay which performs the same function but may be more reliable.

The column DID lock before i put the key in, but it came loose right as i turned it on. I got the "pull key 10 secs" and "serv.col. lock" codes. i waited about 30 minutes and tried it again and had NO problems at all. I even drove around the block. The first time it did die when i tried to pull out of the garage but the 2nd time was no prob. Dirty key maybe??

Default Beginnings of Colum Lock Syndrome

My '01 Z started to malfunction the same way. I purchased a CLB kit and have not had problems since. The kit is cheap insurance for me.

I would get a CLB on order and get it installed. You will be trouble free and will not have to worry about it acting up at the worst possible time.

If you are not sure about the recall stop at any Chevy dealer and have them run the VIN for the warranty recalls.

peace of mind...

If it has not been done I am thinking it can still be done under warranty or at the very least you should jump up and down , roll around on the ground, hold your breath, all that stuff until they agree to do it !

My GM service report shows the recall HAS been done on my car but strangely the wheel still locks with the KEY out and I am not smart enough to know what that means, I am going to call my good VETTE garage pals and see what they say. It may be worth putting that $20 relay bypass in the car regardless.

My service report even shows the car was towed back to the dealership under warranty for the LOCK issue.

It appears that my car had the typical SW LOCK recall but it may still be prone to locking..go figure...

Keep in mind the Z06 cars have a different recall than the regular C5 Vette recall as described in the link below.

here is the C5 tech thread, it is great...

I installed a CLB last weekend. I never had any column lock issues but from what I read it's one of those that can bite you in the @$$ when you least expect it. It's very easy to install. LS1howto.com was a big help.
