HELP Finding my old Corvette
Hello all, I need your opinions, and suggestions. In 1999 I purchased a 1999 Nassau blue hard top Corvette in Houston Texas and was forced to sell it in 2001. I would like to try and contact the current owner to ask if he or she would be willing to sell this car back to me. I have the VIN and was able to trace the Vette to the state of Wisconsin. I have contacted the Wisconsin MVD with the Vette's VIN and the Wisconsin Title number and they have informed me of the several ways that are available to ascertain the owner information. My problem is that none are legal for me to use for the purpose I will be useing the information for. Any suggestions? Do you think it would be ok to post some sort of wanted ad here on the forum along with the vehicle's VIN and Title number in hopes that the current owner might see it? Thanks for any help.

It's state and FEDERAL LAW. United States Code Title 18 section 2724 The Driver Privacy Protection Act, violation of which is punishable by both civil and criminal penalties. There are 13 authorized reasons that are acceptable but seeking this information and useing it for the purpose I wish to use it for is not one of them. Thanks for your reply though.

Just tell them you found a Vette in a lot, give them the VIN, and for $5 they will send you the address and name of the current driver it's registered to.

Have to ask. Why do you want to track down a nine year old car that you got rid of 6-7 years ago? It sounds like more trouble than it could possibly be worth.
But good luck to you if you think it's worth it.

Perhaps somebody reading this from Wisc. can give you some ideas. You could also check to see if someone at DMV would be willing to at least forward a letter to the owner explaining why you want to contact him. Good luck

If you have the VIN, you might try explaining the situation to your local friendly dealership service writer.
A GM service history might reveal recent work done at a particular dealership in WI. I can't recall if a GM service history reveals the dealership or not.
A phone call to that particular dealership might get you information if the service manager of the dealership could place a phone call to the current owner.

This 99 was my first brand new Corvette and I installed a lot of the mods on it myself, plus it was the last Vette my Dad rode in before he passed away. It does seem to be a lot of trouble though since I do not know what kind of condition it is in, and several people have suggested that it may be smarter to just buy a newer model. Thanks for your reply.

Thanks, I have done this already, which is how I found out the car was in Wisconsin. From a suggestion made I have posted a similar post in the regional forum that Wisconsin is in, asking for assistance. Another good suggestion was to contact a dealership service department. Since this carfax has the last serviceing dealership (which is in Wisconsin) I will also give this idea a try. Thanks again every one for the help. This forum is the best!
