Just purchased my 01 C5 , love it , always wanted a vette, beautiful shape 60,000 miles on it. the only things I found wrong with it are it pings under hard acceleration, even though I run it on 93 octane !
I heard somewhere there is a pcm upgrade for these models, is this true ? or are the knock sensors failing?
Mitch
I have an '01 which experienced the same issues.
Is Sunoco 94 Octane available in your region?
Try that and see what happens.
the next step is to de carb the engine.
LSx engines are notorious for oil mist carry over through the PCV valve
buy some GM top engine cleaner(dealer)or Seafoam (most auto parts chains) and follwo the instructions...BAscialy dump the can slowly into the brake booster line or the line from the PCV valve to the throttle body ... The engine will stumble and you need a second person ot keep the revs up.
If that still doesn't work, post in your region section to find a tuner near you. Have hime check for knock
He may have to adjust your timiing tables and air fuel ratios. If he finds you ar eno getting engine knock but you still have the noise ...
Finally there is an H pipe rattle that some confuse with pinging... the fisx is a GM performance replacement X pipe manufactured by Corsa to cure the H pipe rattle.
There is in fact a PCM software update for this as well as other fixes. Mine was done yesterday, but sitting here at home waiting for the dealer to come pick me up, so I can find out if it made a difference. This update also accounts for the 1431 code for the right tank, new whatever...for the change to the 41-985 plugs and of course the pinging. If the software update made a difference, I'll post the yay or nay.
I just got mine back from the dealer for requesting they upload the new software and firmware updates to the car based upon the GM specifications. The change resulted in greatly lowered pinging and almost non-existent. The car feels strong and runs great once again. Gas mileage is still up there as well and 80mph down the freeway, I am barely even touching the gas pedal.
Mitch, RWS1 was right about GM top engine cleaner and Seafoam. These are both great products but you will be amazed that water will work too. You have to trickle it in with the RPM'S up there to prevent stalling but it will steam clean the combustion chamber. If you have ever disassembled an engine after it blew a head gasket the cylinder where it was bad will have a shiny like brand new piston.

My 04 has a slight pinging on WOT. I'm going to run some TEC thru the motor but was wondering which hose as more effective in this situation? The hose at the brake booster seems to be the one of choice, as it is larger and might be easier to pour into. Thoughts?

The brake booster hose is too large therefore the engine probably won't run. The pvc line however is small enough to keep it running yet pour fluid in if you use a hose and funnel on it.
