Default Help with insurance.

Ok I put my car away in october. I forgot to suspend my policy. Now there saying I have to pay $196 to bring it up to date in order to suspend the account. I guess this is good ol Illinois extortion state laws. I could live without comprehensive because the vehicle is in a very safe spot. What would you guys do in my situation? I guess if I elapse I will have a problem insuring this car next summer. I just feel like I'm getting ripped off because I forgot to make that phone call. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

That can happen in any state if you don't suspend it, How do they know if you were driving it or not. Pay up....

I would never completely suspend my insurance. I do drop the PL and PD, but I leave the compehensive and collision in place. they only cost a few bucks a month. There is NO place safe enough to prevent ALL events. If you didn't pay your premium when it was due, the company wants you to become current. Then they will let you drop some or all coverage. You don't want to play games with the insurance company. I hate them with a passion, but they are a necessary evil. But remember, you are (NOT) in good hands with A-- ANY insurance company.

Don't know if this will help. I have Erie Insurance and they offer a "lay up period". You pick what three month's you will lay the car up and in turn you get a discounted premium. The car is still insured but you agree to keep it off the road for those three month's. It is a 'gentlemans agreement'. If you take the car out and get in an accident during your 'layup' they will cover you but you will never get the 'layup' program' again. I think it's a great deal and doesn't require registration suspension or any other DMV problems. Here in PA it's a no brainer, Jan. 1st to April 1st. Works well for me!

If you TRULY will not drive it, keep the comprehensive. If the roof or tree under which you park the car falls (like too much snow) the comp will pay. But if you will sneak it out when the weather is good, keep full coverage. Don't risk your investment for a few hundred bucks.

Sounds like you let the policy lapse. Pay up, get the comp and move on.

If someone had crashed into the garage and damaged the Vette would you have turned in a claim? You had the coverage so I would pay what is owed.

Just on the news here, a guy had his house crashed into FOR A SECOND TIME by a car. The first time did 82,000 in damage. Second time like 14,000 and hurt his back trying to get out of the way. Things happen

I asked the question the wrong way. Believe you me I want comprehensive on the car. That's not what I was asking. Even though the way I worded it made it sound like that. What happens if I lapse and go to another company? I was not planning on staying with State Farm anymore. They are way overpriced and there service is terrible.

So what I'm asking is if I go to another insurance company trying to put comprehensive on the car what kind of penalty will I get? After the first of the year my home and other car will be coming off State Farm as well.

You said yourself you forgot to stop your insurance and you are blaming statefarm... This is a funny thread for sure... After you let your insurance laspe(SP) you will be a high risk.

Who said that's the reason I don't like State Farm? Maybe State Farm is ok but I don't like the office I'm with. I'm sorry that I don't know the ins and out of the insurance company. I do know that $192 for 20 some days sounds out of this world. First she was talking about $50 to bring it up to date then the comprehensive. Which makes sense. Then she calls me back saying she made a mistake and it's $192 then the comprehensive. I believe my comprehensive last year was something like $30 a month. The policy was up on Nov 18th.
