Default C-5 Problems

I'm looking at purchasing a 98 coupe and have a few concerns: How long do the F-45 shocks last? Does the cd changer have problems? do the early Ls-1's use oil? Also do they have a piston slap noise problem? Any other things I should be concerned about? Thanks

water pump
HVAC acuator doors and display

I have a 98 with 89k on her and the only thing that I've had to replace were;

Shocks with Bilsteins,
Water pump and a 180 stat
Steering wheel lock with the bypass
Oil presure sensor
Pads and Rotors
Repair the grounding points.

No real issues with her at all. Doesn't use oil like the LS6, doesn't have piston slap and the in-dash and the 12 dics CD changer has worked okay for me.

Now the things I did replace becasue I wanted to upgrade is a different story which is half the fun of owning a Vette.

Good luck. You can't go worng.

1998 with 109,000+ miles here and only 2 problems: oil pressure sensor and one headlight gear. MN6 with original clutch.

I use NO oil between 6500 mile oil changes. I have got oil analysis and NO problems (they say I can go longer). On later year C5s, GM changed the longest oil change cycle from 10,000 to 15,000 miles. I use Mobil 1 and do what my DIC tells me.

No piston slap, but I did change from premium GM oil filters (UPF-44) to WIX (or NAPA Gold, same filter) to get better oil flow. My cold oil pressure went up 10-15 psi and since the C5's oil sensor is after the oil filter, this equals more oil flow. This stops excessive valve train noise on startup.

Look at sticky in TECHNICAL section for common problems and solutions.
