I have a leaking rack and pinion assembly on my c5 confirmed by dye analysis. The dealership will repair with new parts and labor for $1600. A local corvette specialty shop will do a rebuilt assembly for $650.

What would c5 general do?
Me working on the car is not an option
TIA
A rebuilt unit will work just fine. GM repair is only good for 12 months anyway.

Thanks for the info. The dealership called back, and the service writer said that he "went to bat for me" and was able to get the price knocked down to $1442. The assembly is priced at $562 on gm parts direct. The dealership had the part priced at $1100.

You see if some local vette shop could install a new one for you. Should be about (3) hours labor and alignment. Maybe some of your local members would help you out, never hurts to ask.
dealer wanted 1500. Remeber thats not including the four wheel alignment you will also need. price of remufactured assembly is about what you said, 1100 was quoted to me for remanufactured unit by dealer.
I had it done at Corvete Mikes for 850

I guess the numbers that I was given are in the ballpark then. I am leaning to the local corvette garage.
This additional repair is just a little bitter pill to swallow since the car just had the high pressure power steering hose replaced. It would have been nice if they would have caught the other (original??) problem at the same time.
Are you flippin kidding me I pulled the rack for a customer (98 Coupe) had the unit rebuilt then reinstalled the same rack + Rebuilt the PS pump and the bill was less than $1400. A experienced mechanic can have the rack out in less than 1 hour.
Find a local front end shop
I'd add the small bottle of Lucas Power Steering Fluid additive just to see if the leak would stop. What's another $10?
I may consider this. The leak is now faster after replacing the high pressure hose. Before, it would be a month for the pump to go dry, after the repair, it only took a week. I guess that I don't know how much fluid they put in and they definately did not use anything with stop leak.
I had my Harmonic Balancer replaced under GMPP Extended Warranty on my 2001 last May. They had to drop the Steering Rack at that time to get access to it. Of course something was not done correctly when the Steering Rack was re-installed. The car just did not "feel" as tight in the steering as before (and the pinch bolt was not torqued properly either, but I remedied that myself), but I also knew they would not be able to feel the difference since it was slight. A few weeks later I noticed that I was getting a drop of hydraulic fluid on the floor overnight - every night.
When I had my car in the dealership again this month, I mentioned the leak. At first they could find nothing wrong and then finally said the entire steering rack would have to be replaced due to leaking. Therefore, they replaced it under my GMPP, but the replacement rack says AC DELCO REMANUFACTURED PART.
Lucas stop leak can do wonders. Give it a try first. I had a ford tauras with a rack leak and put some lucas in it . 3 years later when i got rid of it it still didn't leak.
