Default C5 hard to fill up

I know there were some posts about this before but I don't remember ever seeing an actual solution to the problem. I live in CA and when I fill up my tank the pump keeps shutting off. Is there an actual fix for this. If I hold the pump at weird almost vertical angles with both hands and pump extremely slow I can get more gas in but one time it overflowed. I'm looking for a solution if anybody knows.

thx in advance.

You probably have a slight pinch or kink in your filler tube. I think the only way to fix it means getting into tank/filler removal and replacement issues.

Check the codes in the DIC. My 04 had the same problem, although I could fill my tank 1/2 way, it then started to spill out the bottom of the car, when I pulled my codes P0455HC came up - it told me I had a EVAP leak, a major one. I took it to the dealer and they had to replace the filler tube, O ring and at the top of the tank. There is a GM bulletin out there for this problem.

I think the fuel pump (the station's, not the car's) must a differential pressure sensor in the fill line and if it reaches a certain pressure rise in the supply line (preumably cause by a restriction) it triggers the handle shutoff. So my pure speculation is that each pump may have a slightly different sensitivity. I fill up at about 3 or 4 different stations and find that most of them cause me no problem. But it seems there are just one or two pumps that give me the shutoff problem. However, the solution as posted above several times is simply to pull the spout out just about 1/2" and then it flows fine.

rather then pull out the nozzle, i just turn it counterclockwise a 1/4 turn so that the hose is aiming at the back of the car. Fills fine like that.

Mine has problems filling up also. Some stations nozzles keep kicking off. Even stations that I can just set it and leave it run have issues. Once the nozzle kicks off, I can't always round the dollar amount off. It seems real tempermental.

Not true, there is a revised filler neck that I had the dealer install and I do not have any problem anymore.

Using keywords "gas pump nozzle, how does it work" reveals this...

How does a gasoline pump at a filling station know when the tank is full?

This mechanism has been around for a long time, so it is safe to say there is not a miniature camera inside the nozzle hooked to a microprocessor. It's purely mechanical -- and ingenious.

Near the tip of the nozzle is a small hole, and a small pipe leads back from the hole into the handle. Suction is applied to this pipe using a venturi. When the tank is not full, air is being drawn through the hole by the vacuum, and the air flows easily. When gasoline in the tank rises high enough to block the hole, a mechanical linkage in the handle senses the change in suction and flips the nozzle off.

Here's a way to think about it -- you've got a small pipe with suction being applied at one end and air flowing through the pipe easily. If you stick the free end of the pipe in a glass of water, much more suction is needed, so a vacuum develops in the middle of the pipe. That vacuum can be used to flip a lever that cuts off the nozzle.

The next time you fill up your tank, look for this hole either on the inside or the outside of the tip.

It's the pump (nozzle), not the car.
