Seen a couple of posts about how the new EPA regs will sound the death knell of the Corvette.
My earlier reading of other articles (and common sense) told me this could not happen simply from the perspective that the new requirements are "averages."
IOW, some cars could be lower and others higher to compensate. A quick look at the pick-ups in most car manufacturers line-ups clearly shows that for every pickup getting 12 MPG there are a dozen smaller vehicles getting 25 MPG or better. This trend can easily continue especially given the Corvette already equals or surpasses current EPA standards. Plus, there really aren't that many Corvettes sold (in proportion to other vehicles.)
Today I found another piece you might like.
It's from CNN Money and lets us know what GM's chief engineer has to say.
The standard vette will survive. The Z06 and upcoming ZR1 may take a hit, because they are somewhat less efficient. But like you stated, because it is a matter of averages the relatively low production of those cars may save them.
No matter how you look at it GM will find a way as long as the demand is strong.
I don't plan on losing sleep over it.
