I don't see a reason to go reproduction when originals that have been chromed are available for $800. One purchase option advertises in the back of Road & Track. I was surprised to see Corvettes of Houston match their price at $795; therefore, check your local shops before you mail order!
Yes, $800 is fine, IF you want to lose your factory Z06 wheels by exchanging them for the chrome GM's ! IMHO, keep the GM stock rims in case you should want to return the car to stock & purchase the reproductions. I went this route so I could hang on to my '01 stock wheels. The reproductions look awesome & you won't be sorry purchasing them. Mine came from CWS (www.corvettewheelspecialist.com) and are beautiful. There are other companys as well that sell very high quality reproductions; I suspect that many of these vendors acquire their USA made chrome reproductions from the same supplier. CWS = full 3 year warranty/ entire wheel chrome plated & made in the USA.
Just went thru the same decision. I bought repros from Corvette Mike for $1350/set freight prepaid and am very
happy with my decision (they look great:bright chrome) I was going to buy chromed o.e.'s from C.O.H. for
$695/set (good deal) but went with repro's because 1. Did not want to pay freight on incoming then outgoing
wheels (probably circa $150) 2. The repros sold by Corvette Mike or Corvette Wheel Specialists are made
in USA and are actually held to higher strength standards than o.e. wheels and only weigh 1-2 lbs more.
3.Now I still have my o.e. wheels which is a good selling bonus if I sell car later, or I could sell o.e.wheels
probably for more than I paid for repros; I now have 2 sets for 2 looks or whatever I want to do with them.
When you change, I recommend going to Butler tire for changeout (2.5 mi inside perimeter on Roswell Rd.)
They take great care of your car & high speed balance new wheels on the car, Reggie @ Jumper recommended.
If you need any more info about any vendors, I did my homework before making the purchase.
I went with the OEM Chrome wheels from COH. Mainly because they are local and the price was right. I am very satisfied with the quality and service.
I went through the same indecision as to keep the originals or not. I ended up swapping them as I really had no where to store them and the car is too far gone to ever be returned to stock.
I really wouldn't mind doing this but I do have a very small blemish on one wheel.... :bb
Ain't skeered! I need 'em for race wheels on my 2000 anyways! I've had a set of Dilusi brakes in a box for 3 months, they won't fit under stock C5 wheels, but Z06 wheels work. I could even pick them up anywhere between 12-16 to 12-26, saving you a shipping hassle. :yesnod: Let me know.......
