It can be done, but I don't know where. Look at model cars, the plastic bumpers are chrome plated.

Yes, I saw a show on the Speed Channel (I thing it was My Classic Car). They were showing exactly that. I believe it is reather expensive however.

I've never tried them but at one time I found several places that sold kits to do it. It's a process called vacuum metalizing

sure can, my plastic center caps are chrome.

not sure it would be cheap though as a lot of places want "big" jobs, small jobs, then they want more $$$$$

Yes, Here's the place that was featured on My Classic Car the other day, Paul’s Chrome Plating, www.paulschrome.com, or call at 800-245-8679.

I believe that the term for chroming plastic is vacuum metalizing. It is done by putting a varnish on the parts and than putting them in a vacuum chamber and spraying them with a metal solution. It is sort of like powder coating.

Cee3er
I had my fuel rail covers done by this process. They did not come out as expected because the surface was not smooth. Like a dull chrome. The smooth areas were the corvette lettering is came out great. Ran about 250.00 to get them plated. As stated before, search web and you will find platers. Jerry

I have a friend that owns a paint shop locally, and he has a special process that is painted on, in a few steps, that makes it possible to chrome just about anything that can be painted, I saw him chrome wood, plastic, fiberglass, a basket ball,... believe it or not, and the flexablity is amazing, it is a very precise process, and that is usually why it is a little more on the expensive side, although it can be done, and he can also add tint color to the chrome, so you can have red. yellow, blue or any other color tinted chrome as well. He is in the process of getting a website up and going at the moment. If anyone is interested you can PM and I can get you his name and things.

Default Chrome paint

Here is something I bumped into for chroming parts, spray paint rattle can kit. I have not tryed it yet and not sure how well it will hold up, seems worth a try....http://www.alsacorp.com/products/kil...llerchrome.htm there is also a demo video on the site....If this process works and stands up well, think of all the things that could get blinged!!!!

Vaccuum metalizing is not the same as chrome plating. It is a more cost effective coating, (about half the price) but is no where near as durable as chrome. Vac metalizing is basically a very thin coat of evaporated aluminum applied to the part in a vacuum chamber. This coating itself very fragile.. Because of that, VM parts are always clearcoated to seal and protect the finish, so the net effect is it's only as durable as any painted finish is. It is easily scratched, and once the clear is compromised, can quickly deteriorate the finish.

Certain types of rigid plastics CAN be true chrome plated. But it is expensive in comparison. I have several chromed plastic parts on my car.

This is the stuff I had heard of. I don't have any personal experience with it, however.
