Good luck on your search. You may also want to look at FRCs.

If I were looking for Z06s I would be driving to take a look at this car:
http://forums.corvetteforum.com/show....php?t=1890470

It has more miles than you want but it is a smoking deal. In my experience clutches and tq tube couplers like to fail in C5s after about 80k some go further. The good news is you can get rebuild kits now.

No rush man. Take your time. The longer you wait, the cheaper the cars will get and the more money you save towards a down payment.

I too had a regular 98 C5 among other C5's, and the Z06 is an amazing car in stock form. It does everything so well. It handles fantastic. It has great power, and stops very well. And like the C5, the Z06 is very reliable. You will not believe the difference between a stock C5 and a Z06. It is like a factory race car for the street. All Z06's are great, but if you can afford to get a 02 or up Z06, I say go for it. You get alot of extra upgrades and goodies with the 02-04 Z06. I have done performance modifications to every past Corvette I have owned, but I have done nothing to my 02 Z06 but change the shift ****. The car is that good from the factory. Good luck.

Most people think the 20hp is the only difference when going with a 2002-2004...

Wikipedia has never been 100% accurate, I could go in there right now and change the facts if I wanted to.

I say go for the 01 if you are planning on modding. You'll probably want heads, cam, exhaust, etc. and will exceed the base 02-04 HP numbers. Hey but what do I know, I just have a stock 02.

But if you do the same to an 02-04, it will further exceed the base numbers.

I guess my point is that if there is a huge price diff between 01 and 02+, save the money, mod, and exceed what the base 02+ provides power wise. Sorry if this is incorrect thinking

IMO HUD is a waste of weight on the car. It's a race car, not a Cadillac.

If you plan on swapping headers, or adding a cam, there is no reason not to go for an 01.

It seems like the 01 oil consumption deal is 90% internet myth and 10% actual fact. Im sure they are out there but people make it seem like if you get an 01 you are getting a C4 or something.

My '01 was the smoothest-running V8 I've ever owned, and I'm OLD (and had lots of cars)! I shoulda kept it, but you know how it is. She held her own against the 405 hp. Z's too. I agree that the hud is more of a gimmick (to me) - I had one on the '04, and never used it much. In fact, I usually forgot it was there. Then there's the hud windshield $$$$$. It has a special coating, of course.

My 01 Z06 is the best Corvette I have ever owned . Also the fastest and MOST reliable. Also requires the least amount of maintenance. This 01, bone stock, with 68K miles will totally rock your bones and if you are not paying full attention , forget 0 to 60 in 4 seconds, you will be 0 to total wreck in less than 4 seconds.

66,79,85,89,93 and 69 BIG BLOCK.

I am considering selling it this summer and moving up to an 04 Z06, only because it is a 3 year NEWER car. I pray that if I do indeed get an 04 it is as good a car as my 01 ! I will be really PO'd if it is not !

t

ps, if you cruise around town at the posted speed limits and do not consistently rev the LS6 you can easily get 25 miles per gallon. My 69 big block car saw 25 mile/tank it seems. I was at my friends this past weekend and we were discussing gas mileage, this car with 68 k, an 01, shows 20 mpg average on the DIC ,Thats really impressive for a 7 year old hot rod ! When I got the car last year it was like 19.8, I guess my grandmother style of driving is good for something !

I was looking at Z06's this year when I bought my C5 and they were all the same price for the 01 and 02's. the only variable was the mileage difference between the 2 making them higher or lower in price.

I would go with the 02 just because of you might get an Oil consumption 01 engine. My 01 C5 is an Oil eater.

I like the plain jane 01 "Z06" fender badge over the 02-04 (I tend to find the "405 hp" a bit cheesy, looks like something off a 1958 stock car where they used to paint "375 hp" on the hood).

Also the 01 Alcoa Forged wheels have thinner spokes w/ sharper edges, and darker paint. IMHO they look better than the spun cast 02-04 wheels. They are stronger, although a tick heavier.

The 02-04 have the obvious upgrades (steel forks in the later T56's, shock upgrades through the years, HUD if that's your thing, etc).

I bought a mint 15k 01 w/ bolt ons (415 RWHP) in Dec 06, and a bonestock 4,400 mile 01 this past April. Both have been fantastic cars. The funny thing was both times i was looking at 02+ and ended up buying the 01's as they were exactly what I wanted, and in better shape than the 02+ examples I looked at.

There really is no bad choice as long as the car checks out ok.
