First my factory cd player stopped playing certain burned cd's and yesterday I noticed it sounded distorted. I removed the cd, now it won't play any of mine! What gives here? Is the lens dirty, or did it crap out like everything else on the car has.
My 98 just did the same thing. When I removed the cd it was hotter than hell. I replaced the stereo. There are lots of guys updating their stereo's all the time. I bought one from a fellow cf member out of his 2002.
No tunes except the radio that is tough. I would try a cleaner first of course.
Did it give you a warning?
My 98's cd player has stopped for a second then continued again. It just did this 4 times in the last week.
Hmmmmm. I may be in the market soon.
Sounds like you aren't having much fun these days with your vette. Do you have a story to tell?
Well little things have been breaking here and there, as the car is 12 years old now! The new owner will love the fact that I'm replacing everything I bet.

That's one rare C5 if it's 12 years old. I'd keep it.
And I thought it was just me. I recently started burning CD's from my old cassette tapes and when I went to play them in the '03 an "error" came up and it spit it back out. I thought I'd used the wrong CD's so went to the store and "upgraded". Same thing. I had to go over to my sons and I took the burned CD's and tried them in his '04 - no problem, worked fine. Now even the store bought CD's won't work! Bought a cleaning kit from Phillips but no change! So, new radio???
You know, I laughed when those CD player cleaning kits came out (since I repaired consumer electronics for a while). I have never heard anyone use one with any kind of results. If your CD player is on the fritz, trust me it's time for an upgrade. Don't bother repairing that old technology, get yourself some new.
Since CD players play MP3 files now (and more), you can get something that will play burned CD's that contain in the neighborhood of 175 songs now (depending on the compression used to create the MP3). That much music in a 6 changer will keep you occupied for the entire summer!

My 02 does the same thing. (Skips & Error) And I think junkman2008 suggested that I upgrade with MP3. Yeah, I got a ton of CD's too. Anyone ever dismantle a trunk mounted cd changer and try to clean the lens?

I'm telling you, it's a waste of time....
If you want it done though, please don't waste your money by paying someone else to do it, DIY.
Does anyone know the cheapest place to buy the bose conversion harness? I seen one on ebay for around $100, is that fair?
I bought one from autotoys.com (not sure if they are a forum vendor or not) for about that much. It is the new version. Several places have them. I doubt you will find it cheaper than that. There are a few forum vendors who have them. Pop over to the for sale section and I bet you will find something there.

Agree there is a great write up in the tech section on how to do this. Just order you a new deck and order the bose harness and be done. It will take you at most a few hours to toss it in...that is if you go real slow. I did mine in two hours and I took my sweet time.
