An engine is operated by combustion or gas pressure. A motor is operated by electricity or other static energy.

I agree with the above poster, where is the both poll option? Polls are usually slanted to get the wanted results, it muddies the water if other opinions are allowed than the narrow definition of the pollster. 02 cents worth....

I take it that you're too young to remember the old gasoline powered washing machines? I remember hearing the putt putt of the exhausts coming out the sills of houses in the city where I grew up. No

If they’re to be referred to solely as “engines”, why do they require “motor” oil?

I call them engines.

However, have you ever heard a NASCAR driver say, "I blew an engine?" No. Even the announcer says, "He blew the motor!"

Old enough to know WHAT you are talking about, but young enough never to have seen one work, other than at shows, etc - actually, I'd forgotten about the gas engine powered washing machine, but I've come across a few of the old "Maytag" motors in my days -

I stand corrected, but I do prefer the MODERN version

I didn't know people took this so seriously.

I have used both terms, but no one has ever corrected me.
