Have a 98, 25,000 miles, GYD3s non-runflats, A4 with 315 rear. Under abrupt acceleration from stop I get wheel bounce from rears be it on asphalt or concrete. I stop just as fast as it starts but I'm curious if this is normal? I would suspect not and suspect shocks need replacing.
Looking for additional info on where to look if not shocks.
Thanks

Some wheel hop is normal. But if its going boom, boom, boom to the point were you think the axel is going to break you have a problem. I would assume that you need new shocks. Do you have selective ride control?
The Wheel hop isn't near as much of a concern on warmer tires, surfaces. In the cooler air and colder concrete they do have a tendancy to hop more.
Would be cautious and if you choose to continue getting the wheel hop really bad....carry along a cardboard box to pick up the pieces from the destroyed rear axle/tranny... Here tell it can make a big mess in a real hurry.
Though it is a "normal" problem with C5's, if you experience it a lot it will cost you in repair parts and installation. Mounts and the like are really taking a beating when your tires are hopping around. You can easily damage your diff and even twist an axle. Be careful.
One bounce and I'm out of it! I will not allow it to continue however was concerned that it was happening. As you can tell, its happened three times, thus I seldom punch it out from a dead stop. It transfers enough rubber to the road under heavy acceleration.
I have the same set up 98, A4, 3.15 and from a dead stop with traction control on, foot in it I do not get hoppy. Of course could be different conditions.
I have the same setup, 01 with A4, z51 with 3.15 rear. I had some wheel hop but after i installed the Bilstein HD most (not all) went away. The HD are slight firmer then stock my shocks with only 30 k miles on them. If you dont mind a firmer ride I would go with the Bilstein Sports. I think shocks will help you. New tires might also help (I can let you know if tires helped in the spring).
The main reason is the IRS. A lot of IRS cars that make good power wheel hops, like the vette, 03-04 cobra. You can help reduce the hop with different tires, diff braces, and polyurathan bushings.
