The tint of the hatch of my '99 Coupe is starting to get an odd buckling appearance in areas of it. Plus it seems that the tinting on all the windows is turning a little cloudy. Is it possible to get the tint film off of the hatch window without damaging the heater strips in the process? (are there radio antenna lines in there as well?).
Also, can anyone recommend a top-notch tint shop in the south Houston (Clear Lake) area? Getting tint to lay down over those little dots on the rear glass and look good, is a trick.
Getting ready to remove my rear hatch tint as well this week and go with a lighter percentage. I had the Limo tint put on the rear hatch about a year ago and it is just too dark - looks cool from the outside, but way too dangerous for night driving.
There are (2) reported safe methods I have researched for removing existing tint...
(1) Preferably on a "warm" day, back the car outside with the hatch facing the sun. Spray 100% Ammonia solution all over the tint on the inside and cover with trash bag material (also spray bag material so it will stick to tint) and leave in sun for about an hour or so. After this, you should be able to carefully peel the tint off.
(2) Another possible method, but takes longer, is using a steamer (like a curtain steam generator to remove wrinkles) start on a corner and let the steamer do the work.
Either of these methods is supposed to protect any electrical strips in the glass. DO NOT USE RAZOR BLADES EVER to remove tint.
As for the dot-matrix, I have "heard" that it can be tinted successfully, but have never "seen" it done. The best local shop here says they cannot do it to where it will not eventually generate halos or patches of air around the matrix. Therefore, after I remove my tint, I will be masking off the dot-matrix area and painting it with black Krylon (designed for glass painting), and painting that entire top area in solid black from the inside. You can barely see the dot-matrix area from the rear view mirror anyway. They will then tint up to my painted area and it should look fine - I will know soon!
Let the tiint man do it for you!!!! It's too much hassle to it yourself especially if you don't know what you're doing.
I recently had to remove the tint form my side windows and that was a bitch. Having to use a bottle of Goo gone and a razor blade for an hour wasn't fun. The back hatch would just be awful. Let the tint guy do it for you when you have the window re-tinted.
