Remember, your pride and joy will reside on the lift and you will be under the lift, so do your due diligence. My current lift is a BEND PAK HD9... http://i114.photobucket.com/albums/n...p011608005.jpg

Twelve foot (or more) is probably optimal for full lifting height of almost any vehicle, but you could get by with less. You wouldn't be able to lift to full lifting height, but many have a four post lift and use a creeper stool to work beneath their lifts.
I've been looking at 4 post lift options and am just about ready to make my purchase. I've determined that the ceiling height required has more to do with how you plan to use it.
I plan to use it to park 2 Vettes, an 01 and a 65. The height from floor to the open garage door is 109 inches. According to my calculations, I will have about 4 inches of clearance with the garage door open.
I'm going to buy the ProPark 7 LL or ProPark 8 unit.

I have an All American Lifts (www.allamericanlifts.com) 4-post. It is essentially a copy of the Backyard Buddy lift at a lower price. The principle differences between it and most of the other lifts you will see here are (i) its use of solid posts (rather than C-chanel posts) with cross-bars which envelope the entire post (and thereby capture/trap the safety locks so they can't slide off if the lift is tilted), (ii) it's ~6"-9" wider than the others, and (iii) its use of I-beams topped by steel plates for the longitudunal members (rather than C-shaped bent steel sheets). It's more expensive than the typical 4-post lift, but the IMO safer design was worth the additional cost to me.
For height, I fit a C5 coupe and a C6 'vert stacked under ~9'3" trusses.

I also have a Bend Pax HD9W. It is taller and wider than the regular model. I have a 12'1" ceiling in the garage. With the higher lift, I can walk under it with out hitting my head. I'm 6'2" and the rails are 6'6" with it raised fully.
I haven't learned to post pictures yet. I have used the lift for two years now without any trouble. It is due to have the cables adjusted. I installed it my self and it was a very easy job.
Well I went to the local Greg Smith and looked at their unit. I liked the price a lot better, but just could not get over the over seas steel and the non boxed posts. I ended up deciding to go with the Back Yard Buddy. I am told its about 9-12 weeks for production. Its going to be a tight fit with only 9' to work with, but I have talked with them and measured the cars and should just clear. I am planning to call to have my garage door (single) adjusted and modified to go up higher before it bends and moves in.
What did you think of the BACKYARD BUDDY salesman? If it's the same guy I spoke to, his attitude turned me off to their product.
He is an idiot! We looked at his lift two years ago at Bloomington Gold. Super Lifts had a display near his. So...... we checked his out. After learning more than I ever wanted to know, I bought a Panther lift from the famous auction site. It's the same as any of the other import lifts. It just has a different label. I've been real happy with it. If you do buy a four post lift be sure to get the aluminum ramps and a second jack tray so you can remove all four wheels at one time. David
