hey guys! trying to fgure out if a new converter is needed ( installing most likley 3.72) WUTS THE DIFFERENCE IN THE RIDE? im using the car just for street use.
Hey Knight - Im doing the same type of research myself. Since you are going to keep it on the street, based on what I've read, you may want to just consider 3.42 gears and the stock converter. Converter selection all depends on what your goals are and what you are after. Apparently the aftermarket converters (especially above 3000+) will give you a very different "feel" when you drive - some like it, others dont especially for a DD or street car. Right now I'm leaning towards upgrading from 2.73 to 3.42 and keep the stock converter.
BTW - It also depends on your mods. If you have headers/cams/etc, it definitely appears that you NEED an upgraded converter.
I started a thread a couple of days ago about his and got quite a few replys. Originally I was going with 2600 converter and the posters told me that I would be disappointed. Long story short, I bought an SS3600 Yank based off of the responses. I talked to Mike at Straightline who is doing this work along with other mod's and he as well convinced me to go with the 3600. Everyone states that the wife won't know the difference except when a "Stang" pulls up next to her.
If you are not going to be racing on the 1/4 mile track then the stock convertor is all that you need.
although... there is an inexpensive streetable converter that will give an improvement; but not feel loose with normal driving (and doesn't require an added cooler): http://forums.corvetteforum.com/show....php?t=1715694
it's not enough of a change for serious dragstrip regulars though; and the stall RPM may not be high enough for radical cam upgrades.
