VIN Derivative
All engines and transmissions are stamped or laser etched with a partial vehicle identification number (VIN), which was derived from the complete VIN. A VIN derivative contains the following nine positions:
Position--Definition-------------Character--Description
1--------GM Division Identifier-----1-------Chevrolet
2--------Model Year--------------X-------1999
3--------Assembly Plant----------5--------Bowling Green
4-9------Plant Sequence Number--

A VIN derivative can be used to determine if a vehicle contains the original engine or transmission, by matching the VIN derivative positions to their accompanying positions in the complete VIN:
VIN Derivative Position-----Equivalent VIN Position
1----------------------------------3
2---------------------------------10
3---------------------------------11
4-9-------------------------------12-17

I found this info in the 2000 Shop Manual, pages 0-6 thru 0-13. If you don't have a shop manual, pm me with your email addy and I send you a MSWord doc with this info.

yes they do match, ive checked all 4 of the c5s i have owned. it is on the left side of the motor towards the back about halfway up the block. on the trans it is on the top side of the case and you have to have a mirror to read it, i think it is on the left side as well.
