Default Tire Gurus - Question

Believe my 2002 Z06 which was built in June of 2002 still has its oem Goodyear tires (15.5K miles on odometer today).

So- the tires are over 5.5 years old.

I dont often drive 180MPH and don't race- the tire threads are still OK.

How seriously in need of replacing the tires - based on their age ??

Don't you just love it when people ask rhetorical questions like this

I just want to stretch the tires out as far as practical before dropping the $$$.

I found that after 18 months the tires lost alot of grip no matter how much tread was left. So I would say you will definately notice a difference if you replace your rubber.

Me thinks I need to replace the tires before Spring.

Probably going with the Goodyear F1 GS-D3's - they seem to rate well here.

From the sounds of it you don't race or drive all that hard. So unless they are starting to crack, or the tread is getting to the point that driving in the rain is dangerous, I would keep the ones you have. Unless you have some free cash then for sure replace them.

The F1's were scary after 18K. My new Goodyear F1 GS-D3's are very predictable....drove it Sunday in 15 degree but sunny weather and they were great. The traction control reminded me they were cold but the car was very sure footed.

Yes it was a good excuse ......I drove Mid Ohio with the Goodyear F1 GS-D3's and was extremely happy with them there as well. A very well rounded tire in my opinion

Thanks for the link- good article.

My oem tires are about 5.6 years old with 16.5K miles. From what I read- the Goodyear OEM Z06 tires have at most about 20K or so mile life.

At this point - with good remaining thread, I will drive them until they require replacing. This should be in the next 3-4 months at most or Summer.

The article suggests that 6-10 years max life for non competition tires- so I think I am fine till the thread is worn.

NatB....

Look between the treads and see if you see any cracks.Tire Rubber can dry out just like the rubber around the doors.

I would replace them.Keep in mind that the tires are THE most important
parts of the car.All the power, braking & handling is transfered from the car to the road, via the tires.

Thanks - they look good w/no visible age cracks. However - I strongly agree with you on the importance of good tires.

I think I am good for about 4-5k more threadlife( total of bout 20K miles for the oem Goodyear) - and will replace sooner if necessary.
