why on earth didn't GM design the button the way it should have? pressing should go into comp mode instantly,
A reason that GM probably didn't do that is they are building the car for general use by a wide range of customers. Some customers use their cars in the winter and one of the problems with traction control/active handling systems is they do not realize when you are bogged down on a slippery surface. In those cases where the car is barely moving and the rear tires are spinning with the car pointed at an angle of 45 degrees away from where the front wheels are pointed (such as climbing up a driveway on a hill) you do not want any system applying a brake or cutting power. When things like that start happening you need to push the button and get instant cutoff of all aids. The limited slip diff will suffice although the back end of the car may switch back and forth a few times as traction varies from side to side. In my earlier big block Corvettes which were my daily drivers I burned my way up plenty of hills this way.
The Laptrax unit will set the car to competition mode or tc/ah off at startup. Very easy to install, and only 40 bucks if my memory serves. I have it in my car and love love love it. I have a 2000, so the car has to remain at rest until it's in competition mode, but it's only 5 sec. Usually, by the time I have my seat belt on, the car is ready.
My only complaint came after I installed HID's. The laptrax unit sees the drop in voltage from the HID's firing up and thinks I restarted the car.
I highly recommend the Laptrax.
EDIT: I just went to peek at their website, and it appears to be down. 858-597-0070 is their Phone number, they're in San Diego. I ordered mine when the fires were ablaze, and it took a few exta days because of it. I suppose they may have moved, or something. There may also be a vendor that sells the unit, I'm not sure of any of it.
I'm just very happy with the product, and hope it's still available in the future.
I think they are no longer active. The web site has not worked in 2 weeks and when I tried to call them during my LapTrax install the number had been disconnected. Too bad because it is a good product. I did have an issue because the 2004 wiring is different then the install instructions. It is easy to install if you don't have a 2004 and don't need the DIC to reset after Competition Mode displays. I had to take mine to England Green to figure it out and need to go back to have the blue wire that goes to the reset button hooked up. The instrument panel has to come out for that.
I did e-mail LapTrax and got a response as to which wire to use for the reset function just last week.
that's a shame if they are really gone. glad I got mine just in time then! they had reduced the price dramatically, it was $100 then dropped to about $40 and I picked one up.
for what its worth there is another product out there which does almost the same thing. I don't remember what it is or who makes it, all I remember is it looked like it had a D-shell connector on one side for some reason. if memory serves I believe it remembered what mode the car was in and just restored that mode when you restart the car. if that's true I would have taken it over laptrax, which you have to set specifically to which mode to enter, then it does it on its own. if you want to change the default mode, you have to go in and re-program it yourself.
I feel your pain, it catches me every now and again too. My routine on entering the car is to start the car, then put on my belt and do whatever else I need to, so it's less obtrusive to me than you. I just drive with it all off til I get where I'm going, or catch a stop light if I roll before it's set. Add to the mix that my HID's cycle the Laptrax, and it gets worse. All the same, I just learn to avoid the actions that lead to the laptrax re-setting, and I'm waaaayyy happy I have it.
yeah, I have 3 pair of HID's on my car. I haven't turned the laptrax on since I installed them since for daily driving the mode I prefer is no action. I guess the routine will have to be turn on the car, turn on the lights, then wait for laptrax. that could be a problem when you need to turn the HID's on during your drive though. laptrax cycles, turns your TC/AH off but since the car is moving can't put it into comp mode leaving everything off. why on earth did GM make the early models be stationary to go into comp mode?!?

You mean with a Tech II?
Anyone know if HP Tuners or EFI can get into the programming far enough to change the default setting?
