Default Front brake rotor mods

Guys what is a good but inexpensive front rotor for a 1999 C5?

I like the drilled and slotted look but keep in mind I live on a firefighters salary.

If I can't get a good set of drilled and slotted what is a good brand that won't rust super fast like the factory ones? I need to use my stock calipers also.

I would like to know what type of pad to use for a good price that won't produce lots of dust.

I am using it for a daily driver so nascar performance is not required.

Thanks a bunch and I look forward to your input and pictures

Default BDI Rotors?

Does anyone know anything about BDI (Brake Designs Inc.)? They're listed off to the left as a sponsor... Their site shows zinc plated, drilled and slotted rotors for $79 per pair (that's per pair....) which is cheaper even than OEM rotors.... Is this a "too good to be true and listen to your inner gut telling you they're inferior quality" thing, or are they for real?

Let me know

For the pads I would recomend ceramic. Not the cheapest but low dust.

Not sure what you want to spend, but I used these, front/back, drilled/slotted, zinc coated, with ceramic pads hit me about $475. Installed them (w/stock calipers), took a run from Mississippi to Cali and back, with no problems at all, have had a few "spirited" runs also with no problems. Hope this helps, but ultimately, it's your choice.

Default Power Slot / Hawk kit

I put a new set on last spring: It was a package special from Corvette Central. Power Slot rotors and Hawk HP street pads $550. I had heard too many stories about drilled rotors cracking. The Power Slot rotors come with a real good cadmium plating. You can see this in the picture around the outer diameter. I painted the hats black with VHT before installation. After a full seasons use, I am very satisfied with this set up. The Hawk street pads give off less dust than my stock pads did.

"drilled rotors cracking."

So you have to make sure they are "dimpled" and not drilled all the way through. The one's I have that I posted about are dimpled, not drilled through. "Partially drilled holes (dimple) dissapate heat without sacrificing rotor strength."

Your's are looking sharp... Here's a thumbnail of mine showing dimple, not drilled. Black "hats" are nice, as I did mine the same.

I bought the ebay el-cheap-o dimpled and slotted with the zinc plating. They're not here yet.

I had purchased a set of napa auto units (plain rotors) that were super cheap - like $27 a pop.

Painted the hat and had overspray on the friction surface. Scraped off the overspray for the most part with a razer blade. The work great. The pads scaped off the rest. A friend of mine has rust centers on his rotors - so it's worth it to get a can of high temp paint.

I got mine from BDI, had them now for 6 months and there fine... I upgraded the pads to Ceramic from Pep Boys... it was a dramatic change.

Good Luck

I got my rotors from them. However, it was a special deal. I've only had them on for one day now, so I can't give a detailed review, but for the 100 some odd miles on them now, they are fine. They were drilled and slotted CANADIAN rotors, which were zinc plated for $214 including shipping. It was a very good deal in my opinion. BIG HOWEVER.#1 The packaging was terrible. They were tossed into a regular cardboard box with a little bit of foam peanuts, and one piece of cardboard in between each rotor. I checked them carefully, and thankfully, they were not damaged.#2 Also, they were CANADIAN rotors. Now, from what I see, they carry CHINESE rotors. If that's what you want, and are OK with that, go for it. I would not have gotten the chinese ones. If you check around, you can find some good deals.BTW, I got my ceramic pads from Gene .

Did they slap right on or did you have to do mods?

The GM rotors are good. Might want to look at the Sportbrakes ones also.

Take a look at the ATE rotors that Tire Rack sells. They don't rust and I've had good luck with them even on my track car.

I too have had very good performance from these rotors including track day use. In addition, you can purchase a number of different grades/brands of pads at this site at the same time. As an example, I have had good experience with Satisfied GS6 (reasonable cost) for acceptable street performance albeit with modest dust -- part of decent stopping characteristics. Perhaps this info will work for your budget. Just MY OPINION only. Trust this is helpful.

I did Sportbrakes and Delco Ceramics about 2 years ago. No Problems and they still look Good.

Keep in mind these are basic rotors that will perform about the same as oem. They should NOT be used if you are tracking your car.

For DD purposes, go with the drilled/slotted with ceramic pads. They look great, perform well, and stay clean. Just my .02
Sent you a PM with a link to a good set.
