I was wondering if anyone in this forum has heard of C5 vettes catching on fire. A friend of mine had a 2003 anniversary addition. His house and garage just burnt to the ground with his vette in it . There has been some rumors that these car's wiring harnness have caused some fires and they asked me if I had heard anything about it. I have not but thought I would post this question to you guys. I usually spend time on the C6 Z06 forum as I have a 2006 Z06. Any info would be great and thanks for your help.

As a professional in this field (fire), I can emphatically state, I've seen a few houses burned to the ground by auto fires started in the garage, but, in 27 years, NEVER a Corvette, but PLENTY Fords.
Is his house and auto insurance the same company? If so, no problem, but if the auto is insured by one company, and the house the other, well, you can figure that one out, but an inspector should be able to narrow it to ignition source.

Thank you for the info. So far just theories and I thought that an inspector could pin point the source but I don't know much about that process. As far as I know, the car was just sitting there for the winter.
A friend of mine bought a 98 when it was almost new. He hit a deer and ended up against a guard rail when the battery shorted out and the car burnt to the ground.

We had the mis-fortune of losing our house to fire (Arrived in time to get the vehicles out)
The investigators were both able to pinpoint the origin to the same spot.
Having gone through that I will never seperate my auto and home owners. Even though both my home and auto were from the same insurer, they still play games between the two policies.

I would say this is a bit different than a car sitting in the garage for the winter...lol

You're welcome. Fire investigation is a tough science, but a dedicated investigator will work his butt off to determine origin of ignition. Now, if the car was just sitting there for the winter, windows up, hood closed, it really should not be hard to pinpoint weather the Corvette was the source. I have seen houses burned down with autos in the garage hoods closed, and literally no damage whatsoever under that hood. So in due time you should hear what happened. Now for attached garages: I know guys who have nice houses with unfinished garages, that is a no-no! Finish your garage with drywall, tape, float and at least a primer coat, the drywall itself act's as a passive fire stop when done correctly, that means doing the ceilings also. It will buy you some time of protection for the rest of your house. If you have a few extra dollars, "Type X" drywall contains glass fibers to enhance fire resistance which will give you a few more minutes until the "guys" get there.
I saw one that caught on fire because of the payment book over heated! The car came from Detroit with four different poly spare wheels installed before the fire .....was told that it was lit on I-75
I am going to have to look into changeing my insurance. When I purchased the vette, my current insurance company wouldn't insure it so I have different insurance on the vette than I do on the house and garages. It sounds like I better change that. Once again thanks for all of your input and I will pass it along to my friend.

Recent story (true) a guy just bought his wife a new C6 for their anniversary or birthday and their garage caught on fire and burnt up over $100,000 worth of additional property(a C5) and garage contents. No word yet to the cause.
