Wasn't sure if a C6 oil filter is compatible with the C5 and if anyone is running it. I have no doubt I'm over-analyzing something that will make very little difference in the grand scheme of things but what else am I going to do on the forum

lmao I was searching and going thru this thread when I suddenly noticed the date jump lol 
Well I will contribute by saying after alot of research, the PF46 can't be beat for the price and quality. BTW, the PF46E is a more compact version of the PF46 but suppose to be the same thing, although I noticed both are available in some places.

Fram is as bad as they get.
Years back a member ripped open his K&N at the gas station on the humps for the tank fills.

Oil Filters & Oil ?
This is the contested subject just behind automotive batteries. FWIW I used to use Mobil 1 & a Mobil-1 filter but I have left the flock and now use a Mobil-1 oil filter and Royal Purple 5W/30. Not saying anyone better than any other, but my LS1 running is quieter from my seat ?

Wix manufactures the majority of the commercial oil filters to their specs. including cheaper plastic parts less filter element and so on.Wix uses top quality innards and more filter material.My engine builder cut open a wix and a fram and I was stunned at the difference--Wix for me,they don't cost any more,and usually less,truckers and a lot of fleet owners use them,they learned through experience....good enough for me!!

I was sad to see my newly aquired c5 had a ... FRAM 
I changed to a PF46 and Pennzoil Platinum oil...

That'll be the white K&N with the nut welded on the end...nearly ripped mine off too on a plastic speed hump. The black K&N filter without the nut is fine.

GM used AC Delco filter to run their longevity testing for the LS1 design. That is what I use

the "E" stands for Ecore.... its a cheaper version of a standard metal core filter. the Ecore has a plastic element cage, compared to a metal one.
the PF 44 was replaced with a PF 46, which is what I use now.

It seems Fram is not very well regarded in general, but its Ultra line is in a total different league compared to the rest of their lineup:
