I have presented this question in tech..
have gone to 4.10's, with 6 speeds, just intake and exhaust
mods. If you ever had to do it again, would you go with the 4.10's?
If yes or no, give me reasons.
I had a set in my old C4 M6, and at the strip they were great fun. And hard on the driveline with drag radials. The increase in mechanical advantage is amazing. What I did experience was redlining before the end of the track (stock internal LT1, 5200 RPM top), forcing a shift into 5th. When I finally broke the Dana 44 diff case in half with a hard launch, I replaced them with 3:73s. I eliminated the 4-5 shift, no loss of ET, and a more streetable car. That said, a C6 diff case is more robust, less likely to break, so that's less of a concern. But output shafts, U joints, half shafts are at risk as you lower the ratio, based on what I've learned.
Daily driving with 4:10s means 1st is unnecessary, you can easily start out in 3rd, go to 5th, then 6th. 3:73s still give great accelaration, but are more flexible. You'll have to decide, but I'll never go so low again on a street car. And my C5 is an A4, so 3:73s would be lower than I would go, 3:42s more like it if I choose to change the 3:15s. The A4 allows for a cushion, too, and consistent shifing makes for better times.

I ended up going with 390's and am glad I did as they work well with my current power level, I can spin the tires, but I do have some traction left. Also remember 410's are very hard on the driveline if you are doing hard launches either at the track or on the street.

Why exactly is this? Can't see the correlation.
[/QUOTE]Because of the gear reduction the car is accelerating quicker, and therefore placing a lot more strain on everything after the rear end, mainly the halfshafts.

. 4.10s are great in a N/A m6. Expect to lose 2 mpg. Cuts a half sec off your quarter. Huge increase in seat of the pants. Great bang for the buck. Find someone local or at a car show who has them and go for a ride.
