If i bought a salvage title corvette, would there be any way I could register it differently to be able to get around emissions/airbags/safety equipment I do not need or want. I would like to remove the airbags legally because I want a 6 point harness and I sit very close to the wheel when at the track. That is the last thing I need is an airbag blowing up in my face. I live in Oklahoma so I do not have to worry about emissions yet until some politician tells me that my weekend cruiser/track day car pollutes too much....I am just trying to find a legal way so that I can strip a corvette of some things like air bags and ABS while still being a legal car. Kit cars and other one off cars do not have to conform to federal regulations so why not a "Rebodied" (wrecked) vette?
Nobody else has replied yet, so let me take a shot (and I could be wrong). While there are laws requiring seat belt usage, I'm not aware of any state laws (at least here in Minnesota) requiring that you keep air bags installed or operational (some cars even have ways to turn the passenger air bag off). Same thing with ABS.
Windshield wipers, turn signals, brake lights, seat belts------yes, you'll need those for not only street use but track use also.
If the car is already registered, who's going to check for air bags and ABS anyway?? Even if it's a salvage vehicle and you're taking it in to get a new title, what are they really going to check for? If the steering wheel cover still says "Air Bag", how will they know what's under it. If the ABS is working or not, how will they know it?
Find out what the process is in your state for re-registering a salvage title, and then go ask the inspector what his "checklist" is. You will likely have to leave the emission stuff alone until "you take it to the track".
Actually, does a salvage-titled vehicle even have to be re-inspected in your state?
ABS I am not so worried about. I just know that whatever government agency was fining shops like West Coast Customs and Unique Autosports for removing the airbags and replacing them with TVs. They did just fine them but I would hate to have to find myself in a court battle trying to prove that an airbag is dangerous when you are sitting an inch or two from the wheel...but your right, how would anyone know?
