Yes, of course you can replace the stock head unit. The stock head unit in the Vette's is somewhat of a "weak-link" to the Bose speakers. They have the ability to sound better.
The question is:"What are you replacing it with?"
You have to try and match the power rating with the speakers. If the power rating of the stock unit is 4 Watts and the new unit is 35 Watts, you will have some problems.
You have to use high output connections (if you do not already have them).
You may wind up with crossover problems (depending on your AM unit). If you truly do NOT want to replace the speakers, you may have to find some type of "multi-channel" amp w/ a built in electronic crossover.
It would probably be easiest just to give it a try. Worst case scenario: You install the AM HU and the speakers do not work. You pull out the AM HU and put the old one back in, drive to the local stereo shop and let them fix the crossover issues for you (while they talk you into some new speakers)
Oh yeah, I'm sure you already know this: Corvette owners ALWAYS supervise the work being done to their baby's. Never (did I say "NEVER?") leave them un-attended.
