Has anyone painted their own fuel rail covers?? I'm thinking about doing mine - just the raised lines, 5.7, and the corvette lettering. If so, what type of prep work and paint used for lasting results?
I did mine. Lots of sanding but I used inserts on the parts you want to paint. I used the plastic adhesion spay before I painted I didn’t use high temp paint and they are holding up fine
I just did mine with a TESTORS "paint stick" available from any hobby store and some craft stores...many colors to chose from and easy to use.
I did just what you're considering, the CORVETTE, the raised horizontal lines and the 5.7. I left the original red alone. Blue looks almost neon over red.
For preparation, it only needed a thorough soap/water clean up, then alcohol application. http://i114.photobucket.com/albums/n...r011808009.jpg

C'mon. Go all the way and paint every bit of it to match the car.
Actually, I'm still in the process of doing mine. Man, I hate prep workand getting the surface smooth sucks if you're as impatient as I am, too. Every time I think it's smooth and ready for color I have to go back and do more sanding. Guess I'm jsut too picky.
Fortunately, I did get the wife to buy me a decent air brush rig for this project/ PITA.
I agree that the prep is very important. I didn't use an adhesion agent before painting the license plate surround and when I blew it off with the air gun, paint came right off in sheets. I did clean with paint prep before painting.
On the sanding smooth.....much easier to paint couple coats of a high-fill primer and then sand. Sands very easy and quickly.
On the letters.....my opinion is do not buy the inserts unless you want he chrome. Any color is amazingly easy to fill the corvette letters with testors paint and a small brush. Don't worry about painting the letters, just fill and let it flow into the corners and such. Mine took about 15 minutes per cover.
As far as the stripes go, I bought a set of decals online and wish I would have just painted them instead with a paint pen. Mine didn't fit perfect and it bothers me....enough to remove them in the near future.
I bought a can of LMB and a can of clear from my local GM dealer for about $15. Plastic primer from a hardware store for another $5.
Spend some time, not a terrible amount wet sanding first, then lightly in between coats. I think I did 3 light coats of each primer and paint.
Some black testors paint for the letters , and a testors pen for the lines.
I should go do the WW and coolant tank now while I have the time.
The frc's were last year and no problems.
I did the high fill primer and still didn't like the looks. Maybe I would get to sanding one area smooth and then went too far when I tried to get the rest to match. Oh well, I'll post pics after this paint buzz wears off
I did it today - cleaned with soap & water, light sanding to scuff it up then used "Testors" white paint and a small tapered brush. I purchased the paint before you guys responded !! Looks like we're thinking alike
