I just purchased a 98 C5 automatic. How can I tell if the CLB has allready been installed? I'am the Third owner and have no history on this car. Thanks Forum members.
Simple. With the key out of the ignition, turn the wheel the left or right. If it locks, you do not have a CLB. If the wheel still locks, remember to take the tension off the steering locking pin when you go to put the key back in and unlock the wheel.
If your wheel still locks, take your VIN to a dealer and have them run a service history on your car. They can tell you if the various CLB TSBs have been performed on your car or not. Good luck with it.
* GM installed a Steering Column Lock mechanism on all 1997 - 2004 manual (MN6) cars and on 1997 to 2000 automatic (A4) cars
* There is a GM recall for this problem on affected models and years
* It is one of the most problematic issues that we C5 owners deal with
* It can happen to you if you have a pre-2001 A4 without the recall or CLB installed OR any year MN6 or Z06 car without a CLB installed. Age or mileage makes no difference.
* Low battery voltage seems to aggravate and sometimes cause column lock failures
