I've hit it on occassion, looks to be about 6700.As to whether its safe or necessary, there's not much that's truly necessary. As to whether its safe, I'm going to guess that it's pretty close to max that a stock engine should see. I would expect stuff like bent pushrods when you get too high.

Z06 rev limiter is 6600 rpm.
I would not advise upping it without better valve springs and pushrods. Without a cam/blower/turbo, there isn't much reason to do so...your power is falling off way before that point.
