Default license plate frame question

1) what are the threads on the license plate mount made of? the screws are plastic, so i assume they go into some sort of plastic-threaded sleeve?

2) i pulled off the factory black plate frame to install a regular sized (albeit custom engraved) plate frame, and now i've got large gaps all around its edges (about a half inch), which looks tacky. will snap some photos tomorrow to show what i mean...

3) anybody have any ideas on how best to cover the gap? i was thinking some sort of thick black plexiglass cut to fill the entire rectangular space, pre-drill the 4 holes in it, then mounting both the license plate itself and the plate frame on top.

any ideas would be appreciated....

I took a piece of carbon fiber and placed it as a backing for my plate and plate frame. I agree with you, the space around the plate looked unfinished and ugly. I have an after market radio installed with a carbon fiber face plate and if one looks close they will see the continuity in the design. Can send you pictures tomorrow.

Found some pictures, one from the back, hard to see the carbon fiber and a picture of my radio panel.

^^ thanks, that's exactly the idea i was thinking of (some sort of backing plate that fills in the entire area). i downloaded the pic and then enlarged it--you got the idea spot on.

i hadn't thought of a carbond fiber faceplate (or cf-look). good idea!

i'll start hunting around for something.

thanks again.

here's an example of what i'm trying to describe. notice the big gaps around the new (non-factory) license plate frame, and the exposed holes where the factory plate frame used to snap in? looks unfinished.

I've got one like Silverbullet00 that I modified and rechromed. We need to use spacers behind the after market frame (which come with the frame, but you need 8 hands to install)....and you guys gotta fabricate something.
You'd like to think that manufacturers could get it right.

Slo Vette, I had the plate off the other day while cleaning and the way the carbon fiber looks with out a license is very nice. Not that you can drive around that way. If you like more info send me a PM.
Good Luck,

Snapped a pic this a.m. of my car, here's a close-up pic of what I'm talking about...notice the gap around the plate frame.

I took a look at ways to put in some sort of cover. Idea: found carbon fiber-look vinyl decal that looks sharp. I'll get a piece of plexiglass cut to fit, then apply the cf-look decal, drill holes, then mount everything on top. Whaddaya think?

Get Lexan, maybe 1/8", paint the backside the same color as license frame or you could try the fake carbon fiber on the frontside. (Lexan is more durable)
