Everything I have read it is much better getting another rear end with 3.42s in it, They seem to run about 500.00 plus shipping.
If you have 2.73 grars now I don't think you can get just gears, I believe the diff is different.

$500 - $600 for the used carrier
same for installation.
do the tranny seal while it's apart. there's a TSB on leaky tranny seals. it's only $50-$60 for the part... but another $500 - $600 to pull the rear end again to do it later. Ask me how I know.

Here's all the pricing I have.
Gears themselves, Motive, cost $315 from a very popular gear vendor that I bought my 3.73's from for the TransAm. That doesn't include any costs for any tools needed, and any shim kits, bearings, etc that you made need for the install.
I hear the install on the Getrag is far more difficult. I've never attempted to do one, but have done 10 bolts before. It's not that bad of a job, but you have to know what your doing and have the right tools and place to work.
If you have a 2.73 rear, throw that option out the window, since you have a 2 series case, and 3 series gears don't fit. You'll need to get another rear pumkin.
If that's the case, you now have 3 options:
Buy used. 3.42's are very common since they are taken out of 6spd cars all the time. $400-600 is common, but keep in mind you are buying a used rear. Just like all used parts, it can be good or bad. I'm particuarly sensitive since I bought a used rear for my TA and ended up having to replace everything anyway.
Buy new. 3.42 is approx $850 from forum vendors.
Buy new Z06 carrier. Closer to $1200-1300 from forum vendors. The Z06 is stronger and quieter.
As for install, it is usually about $300 for the install, plus another $200 for reprogramming all the shift points.
Do it yourself. It is a great way to "bond" with your car. You should think about changing the Torque converter while in there. It makes the job easier with the right tools and facility. If you were closer I would help.
since you have a 2 series case, and 3 series gears don't fit. You'll need to get another rear pumkin.
nowdays that is false.
DTE and now others have been putting 3.42 thru 4.10 gear sets in a 2 series cases for years now. All you need is to make a spacer (granted; not easy for the individual to do) or use the "thick" Motive ring gear that they are now making.
I would agree that retrofitting a 2 series case with these more radical gears is not a DIY project; but many vendors can do it for you - with a warranty.
