[Z06] 2001 Z06
I am a C-1 owner that might be in the market for a newer Corvette.
I just looked at a 2001 ZO6 with about 26,000 miles. The car is very clean in side and out, but there seemed to be an engine knock or noise. The owner who is the second owner stated that the noise has always been there.
The car is very original with all it's original parts except for tires with 4.000 miles on them.
What should one look for when buying a 2001 Z06. Has anyone experienced problems and if you have, at what mileage did the problems start.
Thanks for any help!
Ray

Good luck with your purchase.
When looking for a Z, 01 or any year, just make sure its meachanically sound. There is no body damage, clutch is good, brakes, tires. 01 Z is just as good as any other year.... Theyre all Z06s!!!
I have an '01 Z w/ 48,000 mi, an '01 w/ 6,000 mi and an '03 w 6,000 mi.
I have never heard any engine knocking sounds. There is a knocking sound that IS NORMAL when the clutch is disengaged on 01's - 04's. It is like a throw out bearing clatter or rattle but is a rather deep sounding rattle. Depressing the clutch stops the noise.
While some of the early 01's had some oil consumption issues, other than a small oil leak out of a differential seal, I have had absolutely no trouble. The Z's are unbelieveable cars with torque, power, handling, stabilty and decent fuel economy. Yes I said it... Decent Fuel economy. Cruising at 85mph in 6th and a downshift to 4th with a little pedal, very quickly yields a rock steady 140 with lots more to go. If you get one that has been well cared for, you will get an unbelievable performance value for the money my friend... Good luck, hope to see you in Carlisle.... Best Regards.... Butch
The piston slap anomoly has been occurring in some engines on cold startup and GM says it is NOT a durability concern . Like the oil ring change there is no performace gains in switching to the tighter pistons. Those hearing the cold piston knock are better off just ignoring the sound till the engine warms up, according to GM engineers.
Gm reduced the piston to bore tolerance and added new pistons with an anti friction polymer . No real performance gain , but done to address customers concerns.
My '01 Z06 ( production date June 18th '01) is a great car without either piston knock or oil issue. Did have the axle seal changed at 900 miles and the steering colum lock fix. No other issues. My car also has 27,000 miles to date. Good luck
